Oudheidskamer Texel

In the middle of Den Burg, where the Kogerstraat joins the Stenenplaats, you'll find the 'Oudheidkamer'. It is one of the oldest remaining buildings on the Island, presumably built in 1599, starting it's career as a temporary shelter for vagrants. Later on (1750) it served as a home for elderly members of one of the local churches. The inscription over the door translates freely into 'The Lord will not take care of them that close their ears to the needs of the poor' which might be apt looking at it's history.

After the restoration in 1954 of the building it was put to use to reflect local history. The local population managed to bring together an impressive collection of art, prints, local costumes, artifacts and items of local folklore. The second floor of the building is used for transient exhibitions. Last but not least you'll find the smallest public herbal garden in the Netherlands.
